Region Structure

The current transition period in the Office for Youth and Young Adult Ministry is making more difficult our attempts at the “regional model” of supporting youth and young adult ministry in the Archdiocese. This being the case, we are moving away from that model at this time. As we move forward, we will continue to support your efforts in youth and young adult ministry within a different structure.

If you have feedback about how we can do that, please utilize the survey that was sent out recently to do so.

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

Blessings to you this summer.

Great time at Youth & Young Adult Ministers Retreat

Far Away Retreat Center was a real TREAT! Great seeing so many Region III folks represented!!!

Priscilla McKinney, St Olaf
Barbara Zick, Prince of Peace
Felix Fabellano, Our Lady Star of the Sea
Danny Bailey, St Nicholas
Chad Hill, Our Lady Queen of Heaven
Ryan Flannery, honorary St Andrew

Rich Shively lead the reflection on Wednesday. He is truly gifted in presenting a prayerful environment. Here are the reflection questions he shared:

1) How is your love relationship with the Lord?
- Do you spend time alone?
- Do you share this with others
- Love: do you receive and offer ?
- How do you deal with differences?
- How do you know the Lord more intimately/ mature in your relationship?

2) What about your sense of call?
- Are you open to continuing discernment?
- How do you pay attention to open and closed doors?
- In what new ways are you being called?

3) Being Renewed in Faith
- Can you think of a time when your heart really burned inside you?
- Does your heart still burn? Why or why not?
- If there are obstacles, what are they and what do you do about it?

We hope to see you all again next year! In the meantime, feel free to share your reflections on the blog!

Minutes: Region III Meeting May 10th

Thanks to Felix for being such a gracious host - with a delicious lunch and parting gifts! And to all those who were able to make the meeting: Danny Bailey, Maria Murphree, Marilou Marcotte, Linda Garcia and Carment Bryant. And to those who were there in spirit - your dedication to the ministry is very inspirational!

It was another great time of exchanges - Confirmation stories, youth group attendance incentives and upcoming events. Here's a recap of what was discussed.

Summer Event Planning:
A regional calendar will be posted listing all summer events. The events "open to the public" will be noted and can be a great opportunity to pilgrimage to a sister parish to meet other youth. Besides knowing what's happening around the region, this calendar may spur parishes with ideas for their summer programs or who they might collaborate with regarding similar events.
An email reminder will be sent to solicit these summer events.

Meeting Dates for 2010-2011:
Meeting every other month seemed to be the consensus of the group. The first meeting will be at the Fall Gathering, September 8-9, 2010 at Palisades. Please come and bring your calendar. We hope to schedule the dates for our November, January, March and May regional meetings.

Confirmation Collaboration:
Sharing ideas for community service, retreat formats and what works/new ideas will be an online collaboration via the blog or on-line bulletin board.

Prayer Intentions:
Please let me know if your group is going on a Mission trip or would like to request a particular prayer intention. We would like to list these on the blog so that the region can say special prayers for your group!

Training Topics:
- The Archdiocese is considering the Strong Catholic Families/Strong Catholic Students program by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry to be put on at the regional level. Please be on the look out for more information via email.
- Volunteer development (Cathesis, Catechist Certification Program, Youth Ministry Studies Certificate
- Leadership Development for growing youth groups
-Technology in Ministry
- Resource Book/Survival Guide to Ministry
- Comprehensive Youth Ministry: Refresher
Let me know if you have other topics you'd like to see offered at the Regional level.

ACCY Gathering/Commissioning - June 5th TO BE RESCHEDULED FOR FALL

The gathering and commissioning of regional ACCY to take place at the Chancery on Saturday, June 5, 2010 is not going to happen. Instead, we are going to do this in the fall. Please contact Bridget Harris at bridget.harris@seattlearch.org with questions or more details.

2 of 2 Regional Gathering: Recap

Thanks to all who were able to attend the second gathering for Region III.

Around the table with were:Danny Bailey, St Nicholas (awesome HOST!)
Chad Hill, Our Lady Queen of Heaven
Linda Garcia, St Patrick
Lois May, Holy Trinity
Felix Fabellano, Our Lady Star of the Sea
Jodie Clark, St Charles Borromeo
Marilou Marcott, Naval Bases Kitsap

Another great gathering of passion for serving the youth, supporting one another and coming up with some great ideas. In addition to the ideas generated from the 1:1 meetings I've had with Youth Ministers, the following is a list of other possibilities:

- Progressive Dinner (sponsored by a regional parish and volunteer families)
- Clam Digging and Clam Bake
- Priest/Seminarian/Vocation Day - a talk with a social
- Organized regional effort around evangelization within public schools- research into how Young Life is meeting in schools
- "LA Religious Education Congress" for Region III
- Topics for future trainings: Getting parents involvement in YM, refresher on Comprehensive Youth Ministry, acceptable technology standards,
- Regional retreat for YM and YM Volunteers
- Regional Mentor Program
- Prayer partner at each regional gathering (rotational, great way to get to know other ministers)

An updated ACCY (Diocesian and Regional) approach was shared and feedback given. Feeback included:
- needing more clearly defined roles/responsibilities for both diocesian and regional ACCY leaders
- it may make sense to pull from the regional group to feed into the diocesian ACCY
June 5th was the date set by OYYAM to discuss this updated ACCY approach but it was recommended to move the date to late May.

I know I left the meeting energized for what lies ahead for Region III. I continue to be amazed at how God is working through your ministries. You are all always in my prayers!

Please see other blog posts for more announcements. Please leave your comments if I've forgotten anything!

Felix (Our Lady Star of the Sea) has offered to host the next Region III gathering. More to come soon about our next gathering.

1 of 2 Regional Gatherings: Recap

Thanks to all who were able to attend the first gathering for Region III.

Around the table with were:
Danny Bailey, St Nicholas (awesome HOST!)
Carmen Bryant, Holy Disciples
Maria Murphree, St Gabriel
Priscilla McKinney, St Olaf
Carmen Hertel, Tacoma cluster
Monica Elizaga, Tacoma cluster

Welcome to Priscilla as she assumes her new role as part-time Youth Minister at St Olaf's.

We discussed the regional model and the reality of geographic coverage. Given the Pierce Deanery meets on a regular basis through PCCYMA, an invitation was given to the Olympic Deanery to attend those meetings as a launching point towards what may work for the Olympic deanery and/or Region III.

An updated ACCY (Diocesian and Regional) approach was shared and feedback given. Feeback included:

- limited capacity for another meeting in addition to PCCYMA for both adult and youth leaders. Could be a challenge.

- the first year might be just adult leaders/Youth Ministers to clarify the ACCY roles and expectations.

- some youth groups are in their infancy stages and do not yet have youth leaders identified.

Overall, it was a great venue to network, relate stories and share upcoming events. Please see other blog posts for more announcements.

Please leave your comments if I've forgotten anything! Thanks, Carmen H. for taking notes!

2nd gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at St Nicholas from 10am - 1p.m.

Sunday, February 28, 2010

A great weekend at Youth Ministry Studies class!

What a blessed weekend spending time with a group of committed faithful attending Year 1 of CMD's Certificate for Youth Ministry Studies. Equipped with a better framework about Youth Ministry, I am energized to see how I can better serve those in my home parish and the region. There was a strong representation from REGION III - Danny from St Nicholas, Carmen from the Tacoma cluster and a handful of new friends from the Korean Catholic Community Church of Tacoma.

If you were thinking about the courses - I highly encourage you to consider signing up for the next class being held April 24-25. You can start at any point of the program. Let me know if you have any questions!

Check out this opportunity: Youth Ministry Studies

Interested in gaining confidence in your role with youth? Do you need a way of gaining credibility, but don’t have the time for a degree?

The Youth Ministry Studies program is a ministry education program for those in ministry with youth, ages 11 to 18, in both parish and school settings. It equips leaders with the knowledge, skills, practical tools and techniques needed for creative and comprehensive ministry with youth. Recognized by the Archdiocese, these programs provide a solid foundation in catechetical formation and a specialized education in ministry involving adolescent youth.

The program includes eight courses. The primary aim of the program is to promote personal, spiritual and ministerial growth. Participating leaders will experience confidence, competence and credibility in their roles in youth ministry.

Courses will be offered on the weekends at our office in Seattle. The first course is coming up on February 27 – 28th! Find out more about the Youth Ministry Studies program on our website here and learn more about the Center for Ministry Development here.

Interested in signing up or getting more info? Contact Britta.Folden@SeattleArch.org.
